Jigging on tuna and jacks
Jigging: everyone knows it. But the first thought is: I'll drop a heavy piece of lead and tap it back up.
Well no, I mainly do it with light tackle and therefore also with light jigs from 20 to 100 grams.
With jigging you can expect to catch just about anything, including mutton snapper, red snapper, rainbow runner, tuna, barracuda, and all sorts of jacks, including horseeye jack, bar jack, blue runner, black jack, yellow jack, almaco jack, and amber jack.
In other words, anything that swims around on the bottom can be caught.
We have adapted rods for this so we don't get tired under the hot sun. With these adapted rods, which can also be called lightweight, you can continue jigging for hours.
It's quite an active but incredibly fun way to fish that you should definitely try in the Caribbean. I can tell you that if you like fish and variety, this is definitely worth the challenge.
How do we work?
We head out to sea in the morning or evening. Depending on what we've agreed upon beforehand, we'll either head to the FAD buoys or stay along the coast. If we head to the FAD buoys, we'll focus more on tuna, but if we stay along the coast, we'll primarily target all kinds of jacks. In both cases, we primarily use light jigs, ranging from 30 to 120 grams. We usually use 60 or 80 grams. It all depends on the current and the water depth where the fish are.
With the custom rods we already have, you'll quickly get used to jigging and won't have to wait long for your first bite. The exciting part is always what kind of fish it is: small, big, narrow, thick, and how strong. Because you can really expect anything when jigging.
